I was really excited and yet rather apprehensive about my first
lesson yesterday. I didn’t really know what to expect. What would the
teacher be like? What about my classmates? And… would my injured finger
get in the way of my learning?!?
But it all went really well!
The only thing I didn’t really like was the copying.

It was a theory lesson, so to help us to remember the key points, the
Principal of Pink Room, Rachel, gave us quite a lot of things to copy
onto our notes. I couldn’t really write properly because of my finger,
so I contemplated begging her to let me off but decided to just suck it
up and be a good student.
Anyway, it was an exciting start because we were given our kit for
the natural nail care course! We get a basic kit for each course, so I
will get more stuff when I start the gel extension, acrylic extension
and nail art courses. YAY! I love presents! Ok, technically these aren’t
presents, but… it feels like presents!
Learnt a lot about hygiene – sterilisation, disinfection, sanitation…
and even more about the nail, with technical terms for its parts like
the matrix, the free edge, the nail plate etc etc, and then nail
problems! Mind-boggling. It was actually quite upsetting for me when
Rachel was going through the parts of the nail, because it made me
realise how bad my injury was.
Basically, my nail was torn out from its root, at the matrix, which
is responsible for generating all the cells for new nail growth. The
matrix determines the shape, size, thickness etc etc of the nail that
grows out, so if there is any injury or disease in the matrix, the nail
that grows out will be abnormal. In some cases, if the matrix is damaged
badly,
THERE WILL NOT BE A NAIL ANYMORE!
The horror!
Apart from that, it was all quite fun! Rachel also did a demo at the
end and cleaned the cuticles of one of my classmates. Speaking of
classmates… they all seem really nice! It’s a small class size (8 of
us?) so it’s quite cosy. Can’t wait for the next lesson to be over so
that we can start on the practical aspect! I will have to remove my
Gelish by then so that my classmates can practise on me. o.O
