My Basket

The Naily Diploma consist of 6 certificate and 1 Diploma exams.
Total 7! OMG~!

e first one - Professional Manicurist Certificate.

We were briefed that to get e cert, we will b tested on Theory, Practical and complete 2 assignments. We had 50min for the practical exam; a complete set of manicure and 80 questions for e theory.

*taking a deep breathe*
Suddenly, manicure does not seem so easy~~

Well, i rearrange my baskets and change e mend pump for acetone. Quite satisfied with e arrangement, i decide to take some closeup pics of my basket.

This basket will accompany me thru e journey of diploma, and even when i start my home salon. And, I had to bring them to school from work every tue and thur. Last thing i had yet to put in my basket was a couple of 2-way colored art pens. I had order them online, and hopefully they will arrive soon.

Oh yes, i also need to label them.
Everything inside e basket except e files, orange sticks and clipper. Initially, i was thinking to stick Swarovski crystal to label them. example - A for Alcohol, S for Hand Sanitation.. But points will be deducted for incomplete labels =(
So I'm still thinking of some other way of stylish labels.
Any ideas anyone?

A Student's Study-Log @PinkRoom : Polishing and Filing!

Polishing and Filing!
Posted on

Saturday’s lesson was all about filing and polishing techniques! Didn’t manage to rent a locker from Pink Room because I forgot to bring my own padlock T-T, but my classmate, Agnes was kind enough to let me share hers until next week ^^
Photobucket
As you can see, this is my basket for class; its almost full and I’ve yet to get items from my checklist! Also, I bought a new hand rest just because I’m lazy to switch around my other one at home!
Photobucket
Okay… I had no idea nails had 5 shapes until I joined Pink Room. I learnt from my previous workplace that you have to ask the customer whether she wants a square or round shape so all along I thought there was only 2 types of shapes in general. Little did I know that they’re 5 internationally recognised shapes!! The first one is square, rounded square, round, oval and pointed! We did spend alot of time filing and going through the steps for the entire manicure process!
Next was polishing, and we had to practice our brush strokes on this laminated worksheet first before doing it on the nail tips! We only managed to do 4 nail tips before classes ended! Hehe Teacher Nicole said ‘good’ when she checked my polishing yay!!!! Hahaha!
I felt that I got a little bit cheated when I bought the red, light pink, white and babydoll polish from the school. I could have gotten better quality brands such as OPI. I don’t mind using expensive polishes to practice because the brush is better!!! The ones from the school have a jagged edge for the brush; not totally flat and you can’t really make a good curve near the cuticle when polishing :( sigh… …
So that sums up my 2nd lesson!!! Cannot wait for next week cuz we’ll be learning cuticle work! Teacher Nicole also said that we should start on our assignment soon… That’s filing and polishing 50 tips of French and red manicures T-T

White & Clear

On e first lesson, my teacher already inform us that we each need a "basket" for exam, and for future business. This basket will contain all e basic tools we need expect big equipment like UV Lamp/Hand Fan...

Before we start to prepare e basket, she ask us to think of our theme. She advised a basket with a same color theme will look neat and organize. i find that very true. Why ikea wardrobe always look so neat and organize? b'coz e clothes, hangers and closet are all in pure white.

I start thinking hard on my theme and e style i wanted to have in the future.

Finally after much consideration , i settle on White & Clear style. Neat and minimalist look.
Thats the color for the tools. As for furniture, should go for white too, but maybe more bit towards cozy feel. But i do like the ikea clear acrylic chair that they selling. White need more time to maintain, but as a free lance, it should not be as headache as retail salon.

We will see how.. earliest to start biz is in 2013 after i grad this year end. However, I can only setup a TRUE HOME SALON after i get my BTO in end 2014. In current home, i can only try to input as much decor as i can. But it will be in the living room...i can't change the living room now..
sighz..
My Basket !

Look nice? There is a few stuff missing, once completed, i will take a full pic =)

Yuppie, I have finally started the nail lesson at Pink Room!
Attended 4 lessons so far and it's super tiring... Classes are twice a week, tues and thurs (6.30pm- 9.30pm) for 2 mths and I am already starting to wonder if I can stick to the schedule

Rushed over after work but lucky my office is really very near. At least, I don't have to travel even further for it. :)
Super plus point for working at Tanjong Pagar, other than the numerous fabulous food
---

Anyway, on the very first day, was given a starter kit for the Manicure/Pedicure Course!
It has almost most of the items inside already, other than those alcohol/hand sanitiser/barbicide/ wipes etc... (found in the store in PinkRoom)
And things like towels and baskets, you should actually spend some time going around shopping for them!

Of course, it will be idiot proof if the sch can prepare for us BUT the luxury of choosing your own fav colours and size and personal touch is the enjoying part.

Although I super heart PINK colour, I decided to try my very best to avoid it...
Reason: unknown
Currently bought flurry purple colour for the towels, now am sourcing for the basket. :D
The trick is probably where to find the time for shopping!

Classmates are fine, teachers are thorough with teaching
:) It's still an enjoying process till now~
Let's just see whether I can continue after April!
And people, fingers pls....

Side note:
I'm quite zombie-fied recently cause I miss my favourite activity aka sleeping

evon signing off, 10:54 PM.

My First Lesson at Pink RoomPosted on

I just ended my class at Pink Room!!! Super exciting first day cuz all students will receive their course kit! Hehe this means I get more new products/ items, which is awesome! :) I couldn’t sleep well last night because I was simply too excited! I also started counting down mentally since last week lol!

Photobucket

All products are in the pink course kit as shown, including all course notes etc! I am only disappointed that I didn’t get a pink manicure bowl… lol; almost everyone else had it in pink while I had a boring transparent one which I do own it at home :(

Photobucket
My course notes!

We had 6 hours of theory and we had to do a big amount of copying! I am very intrigued by the theory lessons we had, I had no idea the nail structure was so complex. We also learnt alot on hygiene, such as the differences between santization and sterilization and the steps we have to do in a manicure process and also massaging techniques. I also realised I’ve been mistaking oval shaped nails as round… Opps! Teacher Rachel; who is also the principal of the school, also started giving hints for the exams. Lol, that kinda stressed my class abit I guess since we weren’t expecting the word ‘exams’ during the first lesson. My class had about 14 students; I’m not so sure about the exact number since quite a few came for makeup class! But we do have a good mix of different ages and nationalities!

Besides the products we were given in the course kit; we had to buy more products needed for next week’s class (e.g. red, white and pink polishes, barbicide etc) Reason being is that I want to get a new set of tools for school use so as to not get mixed up with my current ones. I’m also thinking of renting a locker because it’s tedious bringing a basket of stuff over to school and then for self-study sessions! T-T

I tried on my apron just now and I couldn’t stop laughing. It was ridiculously long so I think I shall get it altered so that I don’t look that short, lol! I cannot wait for next week’s lesson! We will start on filing and polishing techniques so stay tuned for my update on my nail lessons every week :)

Lesson One

Yea! I am real excited about going for my Naily Class.
sorry guys, was too tired to blog on Thurs, and I decide to blog after taking some nice pic during the weekend. So here it is...

I expect class after work will be tiring. And first lesson is on THEORY!
Pure theory for 3 hours. But i did not even yawn ! Guess because i was still excited about going back to school.
I was surprise by the number of the students in the class. All along I thought the class schedule was delay due to insufficient students. But I was shocked when a whole 18-20 gals turn up~!

For a Diploma course, it consist of 6 modules/topics. And each exam consist of both theory and practical. I hate theory. Seriously.

This is e "student kit" for this first module. I was quite impressed as this is quite a complete set.

Actually I was quite worried about first module - the professional manicurist certificate.
We will learn all the basic; everything of naily and how to cut/shape naily for others. This is something which hold me back from doing nail for others. Because i'm scare to cut others naily.
Think i need to grab some white mice in few weeks time.

Notebook and documents for assignments

As a ice breaker, there was a short introduction for the class, and we were to say out what's the reason we took up this course. Some for passion, some going to open a Salon, some planning home-based salon..

Mine intention was home-based salon. Its not a bad idea to do something you fancy and earn some extra allowance during the weekend. Well, hopes everything turn out well.

In the PINKROOM academy, just like its name, everything was in PINK. What will be my home-based salon color palette in future... hmmm...

Gold Prize Win in Indonesia!!

PinkRoom participated in COSMOBEAUTE Indonesia International Nail Compeition last October.
It was a grand event in Indonesia as nail technicians from all over Indonesia and neighbouring countries would travel down to this beauty fair to take part in the nail competition. Many may not be aware but the nail industry in Indonesia is actually very happening. They do pretty nail art, and also nail extensions! There are many salons that specialises in Japanese kawaii nailart too...

Our Senior Educator, Nicole took part in the Nail Extensions category. Most of the other contestants were from Indonesia. Some of them are experienced technicians in Salons...
It was Nicole's first time participating in the nail competition in Indonesia and she managed to clinched the GOLD PRIZE for the NAIL EXTENSION CATEGORY!!!

YIPPEE to our SENIOR EDUCATOR Nicole and our MASTER EDUCATOR, JOE CHUA's competition training techniques!!

BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO NICOLE for placing the top prize~!

Nicole won a hamper full of nail products, a plaque and 2.5 million Rupiah in cash!!!
The culture for the nail competition is slightly different as those in Hong Kong and Korea. The prizes are Gold, Silver and Bronze instead of the usual first, second and third. And there was cash prizes and product hampers on top of the winning plaque!!

Photos credited to Cosmobeaute.com.

There was also a Fantasy Nail Art Category for the competition. The theme was “Save the Planet”. For Fantasy Nail Art Category, contestants are judged on their overall look, not only the nails... Which means that using materials that is recycled to create the final look will also gives them additional points!
The outfits that the contestants did were all very over-the-top and futuristic. Most of them had their face painted and was wearing very creative outfits. It was very different as compared to those we saw in Korea and Hong Kong. It was very fun to watch!

Once again~~ Congrats to our senior educator NICOLE!
