When It Comes To Class Size, Smaller Isn't Always Better

One of the most common questions we get during our course consultation sessions is -

Would a smaller class size be more
effective when learning nails?

And to that, we say a big resounding NOPE!=)

Let us explain…

A hot topic among our teaching staff when reviewing the syllabus every year is essentially about how to maximise the amount of student learning during each class. Every little detail of our syllabus and coursework have been meticulously thought through and perfected after hours of discussions with years of experience. PinkRoom is in constant dialogue with educators from around the world to improve our teaching methods and give our students an unrivalled learning experience!

BIGGER CLASS = BIGGER POTENTIAL

Among all the other topics discussed, one thing our educators all agree on is that when it comes to class size, smaller isn't always better. The number of students in a class has the potential to affect how much is learned in a number of different ways. For example, it could affect how much time the teacher is able to focus on individual students, and the number of classmates would also affect the type of support circle a student has.

Our teaching staffs have attended large classes and small classes, and we agree that a number in the middle would be most suitable. As such, PinkRoom makes it a point to cap our class size at 20 pax.

BIG CLASS vs SMALL CLASS

It’s a balancing act really - we all agree having too large a class size (i.e. 30 or 40 pax) would mean the teacher’s resources might be overstretched and the attention a student is given is limited. That is definitely not what we want.

However, on the flip side, having too small a class size isn't the answer either. Students would lose out on the advantages of a larger class size, such as healthy competition among students and more ideas/insights to learn from.

GAIN CONFIDENCE & EXPERIENCE

Furthermore, when learning a vocational skill such as nail care... Student interactions as well as pair work are frequent and an important part of coursework. A larger group of classmates would mean better exposure to a wider range of nail types/shapes/sizes/scenarios and more opportunities for practice.

We find that our students gain more confidence in their skills this way and the experience would only serve to better prepare them for a career in the nail industry. Sure, of course our teachers will still show you pictures and diagrams of the different nail types…but nothing beats having firsthand experience in seeing and practicing on an actual person!

And unless you plan on just having one customer for the rest of your career, the reality of the situation is that as a manicurist, you need to be well-versed in all types of nails so that you are able to serve a wider variety of customers. Can you imagine just practicing on one or two sets of nails when in school? What would you do if a customer with a different nail shape walks into your salon one day? *shudder*

BE READY FOR THE REAL DEAL!
